The farm placements business was set up as a separate company in March 2005. This was done in response to the shortage of farm labour available during the Celtic Tiger. Recruitment was done in Poland and Slovakia, interviews were done in these countries for suitable people.
The demand for the operators was very good well into 2007 with numbers reaching 44 in March of that year. But with the better operators moving into the building sector it became harder to get people of the same dedication.
Before 2005, the Co. Waterford Farm Relief Service was providing overseas labour for farmers. In 1998 young New Zealand farmers were brought into Ireland for work on dairy farms, and young Irish farmers were exchanged to New Zealand. This provided these young farmers with modern farming experiences, which improved their business when they returned home. A year's placement contract was given under the working/holiday visa scheme, when the visa had expired, people returned home. This has now become relevant again with work opportunities decreasing in Ireland, young people can have their work placement, accommodation, visa and flights arranged for New Zealand and Australia through our placements company.
To-day the farm placements company have a number of nationalites in its employ, this includes South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland, Hungry and Poland. The farms they are placed on vary from dairy farms, to pig farms to organic poultry. FRS Placements prides itself in getting the most suitable candidate for our client within budget.

'I started work with FRS Farm Placements over five years ago, since then I've worked on three different dairy farms in the Cork area. Farm placements has always provided me with a suitable position in that time'.
Mr. Paul Meering, Dairy Farm Operator Charleville, Co. Cork.
